Helping Biddeford Families Create Lead-Safe Homes

Many of the homes that give Biddeford its historic charm were built decades before lead-based paint was banned in residential construction. While these older homes contribute to the community's character, they can also present hidden health risks for young children if lead hazards are not addressed.

Fortunately, Biddeford residents have access to an incredible local resource designed to make homes healthier and safer.

The City of Biddeford's Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Program helps eligible property owners identify and reduce lead hazards through federally funded assistance. Working in partnership with Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition, the program supports families by creating safer housing while preserving affordable homes throughout the community.

Lead exposure often occurs when old paint begins to deteriorate, creating dust that children can accidentally inhale or ingest. Because many children show no immediate symptoms, families may not realize exposure has occurred until developmental or learning concerns appear later.

Preventing exposure begins with awareness. Homeowners and landlords can:

• Regularly inspect painted surfaces for peeling or chipping paint.

• Address repairs promptly using lead-safe practices.

• Keep homes clean by wet-mopping floors and wiping windowsills.

• Schedule routine blood lead testing for young children.
